I recently saw an add that said you were looking for local businesses and/or professionals to feature in your AtWork column. I immediately thought of my own Life Coach. Her name is Valerie Curcuro. "I just wanted to let you know how much I enjoyed your presentation at the Ambassador Meeting today.  One would never have guessed that you were a former wall-flower.  You seem very comfortable approaching people, and provided such a unique point of view.  Your examples of when to approach or not approach a group were most helpful.  You are quite right - sometimes groups of people seem very closed off, but it's good to remind ourselves that it may have nothing to do with us, but is more likely a result of the intimacy of that particular conversation.
    I always feel a bit apprehensive about the nature of discussions I have with folks in these settings.  All the real estate trainers in the world would tell you that you should be constantly letting people know what you do and asking for their business, but from my point of view, very few people are unaware of what a realtor does (or an insurance agent, or an accountant for that matter).  I'm with you - the most fun I have in a room is introducing someone to other people who might share some commonality in their businesses.  I had a friend who was starting her own graphic design business, and it was a kick to see how many people I could find at a mixer one night that might have clients for her, and vice versa.
